Laba Festival
The Laba Fesitival is ta traditional Chinese holiday celebrated on the eight day of the 12th lunar month. “la” is the name given to the 12th lunar month and “ba”the numner eight has verg good connotations in Chinese, which translated is “Laba”.
There are lots of legends about the origin of this festival and we could not tell which one is true, but what we know today is that the Festival started as a sacrificial offering to ancestors. It was also a time for the ancient Chinese to pray to heaven and earth that there would be a bountiful harvest. Many people hoped for good luck as well for the coming year.
Laba Festival is known as “Laba porridge”, which is the most important element of the festival. In gengerally, the porriage contains eight ingredients(here eight does not necessarily mean exactly eight; it just means many) which can include glutinous rice, red beans, millet, Chinese sorghum, peas, dried lotus seeds and some other ingredients, such as dried dates, chestnut meat, walnut meat, almond, peanut, etc. It will take a little long time to be done within 2 hours, then the family memners eat the porridge together. According to the legend after eating laba porridge, who will be the Buddha’s blessing.
On the day, hotel and temple will send the porridge for free, many people stand in line to get the loving porridge, and the scene was very lively.
Another traditional is the soaking of Laba garlic, garlic is soaked in vinegar for more than twenty days starting from Laba festival. When the Chinese New Year comes, the garlic and vinegar is used alongside jiaozi on the table.
To be honesty, there are many traditional festivals in Chinese, which are the intangible cultural heritage and symbol of the National spirit of our country. For the excellent culture, it is inherited and developed by the descendants.
